Aims and Promises:
I am Ngitira Benson a widowed single dad in Lodwar, Turkana, Kenya.I am a social health worker and the founder of akilokony community based organization(akilokonycbo.org) in kenya. Turkana is a desert region with few educational and economic opportunities and many hungry children. Volunteering in my village clinic, I saw children dying of malnutrition. Recognizing that fixing hunger must begin at the grassroots, I obtained a bachelor's program in Nutrition and Dietetics and dedicated my life to educating my fellow villagers on better child nutrition.
One day i felt sad because I couldn't afford to buy my son Humphrey a birthday present. I called a friend and offered to send me $50 to buy books that Humphrey could read first, but then I would make them widely available. That was the beginning of Turkana's library for the village children.I have found a space to host the collection—and the books are quite popular with the kids.
Now, i am turning this modest program into something new and extremely.I am combining access to the library with a meal program and literacy education. Kids can come on the weekend to read or borrow books and receive a hot, nutritious vegetarian meal using locally sourced beans, grains, and vegetables along with English reading lessons. I have lined up a reading teacher, a site, security, cooking fuel, water, and kitchen space. I am also working on establishing a permanent site for the library. I am also negotiating with an international nonprofit to fund construction of a well—an enormous betterment for the women.
In short, I make things happen, despite tough odds.
US dollars go far in Kenya. I got 13 books with with the little contribution from friends. The program cost around USD $3000/£2245 for a year. Can you help? Whether it's $50 or $5000, your contribution will be used effectively to make a huge difference. There’s nothing more important than seeing formerly hungry children thrive. Warmly,
Ngitira Benson
